Common Errors During Constructing a Wood Fence

People like to build their own fences as they need but the final product would be better if they take little changes on their constructing procedure. To get longer lasting and better looking wood fence panels, some basic tips can be applied which can change the whole thing encouragingly.

About two feet hole is dug with post hole digger for 4x4x8’ treated post at a space interval of eight feet apart. Since making holes at a right proportion is the most important thing but in most cases people do mistakes here. Generally a fence installer use a post hole digger to ensure the posts well anchored with the base. The post hole digger is run at a certain angle around the hole to make a ball shaped anchor at the bottom of the cylindrical hole. Thus the posts become more secure and steady if the post hole is dug according to this manner.

Some people often forget the fact that woods do not join with concrete. Wood forms are used in the concrete job to give frame to concrete by the help of nails and stakes. After certain periods of time, workers take out nails and wood forms are removed from the concrete.  Another problem may arise by bugs and water in the soil that can weaken the wood posts. This problem can be solved by applying black tar on the lower part of the post at about two feet that is kept beneath the soil.  This will give more times to post to get rotten by soil water and helps to stick the post with concrete.

When the posts are all leveled and set, the worker should allow them to dry for at least 24 hours before nailing on them. It may affect badly if the worker try to nailing on them before the concrete is completely set.

Often people build stockade fence with only two rails but it would be better if they use three rails. The three rail fencing system will give more longevity than a two rail fencing system. The upper rail needs to be positioned on the top of the fence posts horizontally. It is good to fix fence slats at about 8” above the upper rail otherwise the slats may get twisted with ages. For similar reason the bottom rail need to be fixed at about 8” above the bottom of the fence slats.
The center rail must be positioned between the upper and the bottom rails. To build stronger fence the worker should be concerned about placing the bottom and middle rail vertically. It is also an easy way to make the fence looking good and to protect the fence from warping.

It is a common sense that the water drain always in a fixed direction that is from up to down. For this reason it has seen in many painted wood fence with its bottom bubbling and rotting. The paint or wood sealer protect the fence from moisture and helps the wood from rotting but unluckily if the lip or linger factors are not known to the installer, the worse thing may occur. The installer should be well aware about the flow of water and a suitable placing of a wood fence thus can be effective enough since it gives an extra protection from rotting by soil water. Sometimes installers forget to seal the bottom lip of the wood and it causes the wood layer totally exposed to the draining water. Within a year the exposed wood of the bottom of the fence start to get rotten by absorbing soil water.

So, if you want to protect your wood fence for couple of years more then you must paint the bottom and the top lip of it which will prevent the fence from direct absorption of water.
